Dionysus on Pont Notre Dame, Paris, France

Whilst Pont Neuf lays claim to being the oldest original bridge in Paris, Pont Notre Dame is the site of the oldest bridge crossing dating back into antiquity. As early as 886 during the Norman conquest, the existing crossing was destroyed and rebuilt as a plank bridge. The bridge was reconstructed a number of times with different names but the final metal construction included stone arches on either side with a carving of Dionysys at their center.
